Jaguar Research Center

The Jaguar Research Centre opened in 2007 in the heart of the 270,000-acre Meeting-of-the-Waters State Park. The park’s abundant Capybaras and Paraguayan Caimans, which are favourite prey species, support the world’s densest and tamest population of Jaguars. JRC is owned and operated by two experienced, international wildlife biologists who aim to show that high-quality ecotourism can anchor a sustainable future for the Pantanal.

From 1 June through 1 Nov 2008, our InstaJaguar patrol system showed JRC guests 298 Jaguars in 110 guest days, or an average of 1.8 per day. Since 2006, all 104 groups of guests who have spent three or more nights at JRC saw at least one of these big cats. Some groups saw seven, eight, and even 10 Jaguars in a stay of 3, 4, or 5 nights.

We still cannot guarantee a Jaguar every day, as a minority of days produce no sightings. Furthermore, sightings vary with heat, cold, rain, and seasonal water level changes. Despite the challenges, we have BY FAR the best Jaguar record in the world. The data speak for themselves. Never before in the history of the world have Jaguars co-existed peacefully with humans as they now do successfully in the amazing wildlands of the Meeting-of-the-Waters Park. Come see for yourselves.
